Trek through rice terraces and ride bamboo boats past limestone cliffs

The Experience

Four days means you leave Hanoi at 7am on day one and don't return until late afternoon on day four. The first stop is Thung Khe Pass, where you can buy Com Lam—sticky rice cooked inside bamboo—from local stands before arriving in Mai Chau for lunch. That afternoon you cycle through the valley past White Thai villages and brocade production facilities, then climb to Chieu Cave for views across the entire valley before heading back to your homestay for tea.

Day two starts at 6am and takes you into Pu Luong Nature Reserve by van and on foot. You trek a small dirt path through isolated hamlets and jungle to a waterfall with free time to swim, then eat lunch at a local homestay. In the afternoon you cross a hanging bridge over the Cham river, walk through Ba village past traditional stilt houses, and see the bamboo waterwheels—an irrigation system specific to the Thai people here and among the most impressive in Vietnam. The day ends with a bamboo boat ride before you return to your lodge, where an infinity pool and your room are available to relax in.

Day three is another early trek, this time to Kho Muong Village and Bat Cave through rice terraces that stretch to the horizon. You walk around the village and reach the cave entrance (entry depends on weather), then check out and drive to Ninh Binh. On the final day you cycle to Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, the seat of Vietnamese emperors in the 10th century, then take a boat through the UNESCO-listed Trang An Landscape Complex—a serene trip past karst peaks covered in jungle, through caves and past temples. You're back in Hanoi by 6:30pm.

What’s included

  • Air-conditioned transport throughout.
  • a live English-speaking guide.
  • three nights in homestays and ecolodges.
  • breakfast, lunch and select dinners.
  • cycling and trekking gear are your own responsibility, though the itinerary specifies what activities require them.

Is this one for you?Hotel pickup from Hanoi on day one means you don't arrange your own transport to Mai Chau or coordinate timing with other travelers—the van collects you and the small group moves together for four days, which is what lets you interact with locals instead of passing through as part of a larger crowd.
