The experience

The tour departs from Palm Springs and drives you straight into Joshua Tree National Park's best-known areas without the logistics of navigating yourself. Quail Springs opens the day: a boulder field where the rocks are around 1.7 billion years old, older than any dinosaur, and the granite formations are massive enough to walk on and photograph from every angle. From there the route moves to Banana Cracks, where advanced climbers tackle the boulders but you walk the perimeter surrounded by Joshua Trees and stone formations that dwarf the landscape.

Hidden Valley is the park's main hub and the tour stops long enough to explore the enormous rock formations and the climbers working the walls. Then comes Keys View, close to 5,500 feet in elevation and one of the highest points in the park: on a clear day the view stretches across the Coachella Valley, the San Andreas Fault lines, and all the way to the Salton Sea and Palm Springs below. Cap Rock offers a quick, easy walk through more Joshua Tree formations and surreal desert views before the optional stop at Skull Rock, an iconic boulder shaped like a skull that has appeared in films and is popular with families because the rocks are low and climbable.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the guide navigates the stops and timing, so the four hours holds together without you building the day. Bottled water and protein bars are in the vehicle. The total duration includes drive time between stops, and the park entrance fee (around $15 per person if you don't have a pass) is separate.
