The experience
The route you hike depends on what matters to you. Before you arrive, you'll work together to figure out whether you want a leisurely walk through the desert or a strenuous climb, what geological formations or plant life you're drawn to, and how the season and weather shape the day. The guide adjusts the pace and stops moment to moment, so the hike stays matched to your group's energy and interests rather than locked into a preset itinerary.
You'll move through the diversity of High Desert flora, fauna, geology and cultural history. The guide contextualizes what you're seeing by drawing on two decades of walking these trails and living in the Mojave. Regular breaks are built in to take in the view, eat, and talk through what makes this landscape distinct. Water is provided in either reusable 1.5 liter bottles or 2-3 liter hydration bladders, and you'll carry a daypack.
The hike typically runs between 6 and 9 hours depending on the route and the group's pace. You'll meet at a time and location you finalize together beforehand. Joshua Tree National Park entrance fees are not included and should be arranged separately.

Top questions
What's the difference between a leisurely hike and a strenuous one on this tour?
The guide customizes the route and pace to your group's preference before you arrive, so a leisurely hike focuses on shorter distances and easier terrain with more time at viewpoints, while a strenuous hike covers more ground and includes steeper climbs. The guide can also adjust the intensity moment to moment if the group's energy shifts during the day.
How much water do I need to bring, or is it provided?
Water is provided in either reusable 1.5 liter bottles or 2-3 liter hydration bladders, so you don't need to carry your own supply. A daypack is also provided to carry the water and any personal items.
What should I know about the geology and ecology of Joshua Tree before I go?
The guide will explain the unique characteristics of the High Desert landscape, flora, fauna and geology as you hike, so no prior knowledge is needed. The guide's 20 years of living and walking in the Mojave Desert means the commentary is grounded in deep local experience rather than generic park information.
Can I choose which parts of Joshua Tree National Park we hike through?
Yes, the route is customized to your interests before you arrive, so you can request specific formations, plant life, cultural sites or areas you want to explore. The guide will design the hike around what matters most to your group.
Is this hike suitable for someone who is moderately fit but hasn't hiked in a while?
Moderate physical fitness is recommended, and the guide adjusts the route and pace to match your group's abilities. Because the intensity is customizable and the guide can modify the hike moment to moment, you can discuss your fitness level beforehand and the guide will design an experience that works for you.
