You arrive at Joshua Tree without a car or a plan for the park itself. The guide picks you up and drives through Yucca Valley and the town of Joshua Tree first, pointing out local restaurants and bars (from artsy spots to Old West dives), while explaining how cattle ranching and mining shaped these communities. A stop at Pioneertown, a former Hollywood Western movie set, comes next, with stories about the film stars who shot there and a local ghost story that adds an edge to the visit.
