The Experience

We rolled up to the edge of Koh Samui’s jungle and I could already smell that earthy mix — wet leaves, a bit of fuel, maybe even coconut somewhere in the air. Our guide, Lek, handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew what kind of mess we were about to get into. I’d never driven an ATV before, so when Lek gave us a quick rundown (brakes are here, don’t panic on the hills), I tried to look braver than I felt. My partner stalled twice just getting out of the lot — Lek just laughed and said something about “first-timers always make good stories.”

The first few minutes were all nerves and mud splatters (more mud than nerves after a while). We bumped through rubber plantations where workers waved at us from between the trees — one guy had his radio playing some Thai pop song that stuck in my head for hours. The trail kept changing: hard-packed red dirt then suddenly slick patches where last night’s rain hadn’t dried yet. At one point we stopped by a little river crossing; Lek pointed out some wild ginger growing by the bank and let us taste it — sharp, almost spicy-sweet. Not what I expected to remember from an ATV tour but there you go.

After climbing up this bumpy stretch that made my arms ache (in a good way), we reached a mountain viewpoint. The air felt cooler up there — honestly, I just stood quiet for a second because you could see half the island laid out below, haze over the sea and all those green hills rolling away. Someone in our group tried to take a selfie but dropped their phone in the mud; we all cracked up, even Lek who fished it out with a stick. It wasn’t glamorous but it was real. The ride back was faster somehow — maybe because we finally got comfortable or maybe because we were chasing that feeling of being right in it.
