The Experience

I’ll admit, I was nervous when we first met our guide at Maenam Beach. The jet skis looked bigger than I expected—sleek, a bit intimidating—but our guide had this easy way of explaining everything. He showed us how to handle the Seadoo (I still fumbled with the throttle at first), and somehow that made it feel less like a tourist thing and more like we were just out for a wild ride together. The salt in the air mixed with sunscreen smell, everyone laughing about who’d fall off first. I didn’t expect to feel so loose before we even left shore.

Once we got going, it was pure noise and spray and sun on my face. Cruising past that temple—our guide slowed down so we could see the gold glinting in the light—I tried to ask him about it but mostly just got a big grin back over his shoulder.
