The Experience

"You ever cross four countries before lunch?" That’s what our guide, Daniel, asked as we rolled out of Zurich in this super comfy van (Wi-Fi actually worked). It was early but not too early—enough that the city was just waking up. The air outside still had that cool Swiss snap to it. First stop: Rhine Falls. I’d seen pictures but standing there, the spray actually hit my face and I could barely hear myself over the water. We squeezed onto this little boat that got so close I thought my phone would get soaked. Some kid next to me started laughing when I flinched—guess I wasn’t as brave as I thought.

After drying off (sort of), we drove into Germany and landed in Lindau. The streets were all cobblestones and pastel buildings—felt like a movie set, honestly. Daniel pointed out a bakery where he said locals grab “Brezn”—I tried to order one and totally butchered the pronunciation; he laughed but helped me out. Lunch was slow and easy by the lake. You could see Austria across the water if you squinted. Then Bregenz—just a short hop away—was quieter than I expected but had this artsy vibe along the promenade. There was a guy sketching boats on a bench and for a second I wished we could stay longer.

Liechtenstein was next—Vaduz is tiny but kind of proud about it? The castle sits up on the hill watching everything below. We wandered past the Cathedral of St. Florin; bells were ringing for some reason, echoing through these narrow streets lined with bright flags. Our group sort of drifted apart here, everyone doing their own thing for a bit—I ended up chatting with an old woman selling stamps who told me she’d lived there her whole life. She had this way of making you feel like you belonged for those five minutes.

The drive back to Zurich felt quieter—maybe everyone else was tired or just full of new places in their heads. I kept thinking about that first blast of cold mist at Rhine Falls and how weirdly satisfying it was to have four different currencies rattling around my pocket by sunset.
