The experience

"You ever cross four countries before lunch?" That’s what our guide, Daniel, asked as we rolled out of Zurich in this super comfy van (Wi-Fi actually worked). I ended up chatting with an old woman selling stamps who told me she’d lived there her whole life. She had this way of making you feel like you belonged for those five minutes.

The drive back to Zurich felt quieter: maybe everyone else was tired or just full of new places in their heads. I kept thinking about that first blast of cold mist at Rhine Falls and how weirdly satisfying it was to have four different currencies rattling around my pocket by sunset.
