The Experience

The drive from Zurich takes you to Lucerne, the capital of central Switzerland. A driver-guide travels with the group and provides a map and information about the city, but the afternoon is yours to spend as you choose. Most travelers start with the Chapel Bridge, the 14th-century covered landmark that sits at the heart of the Old Town, then walk to the Lion Monument, a carved stone lion resting in a park near the city center. Both are free to see and a short walk apart.

Beyond the two main sights, Lucerne holds several other stops worth your time. The Jesuit Church, built in 1666, is considered one of Switzerland's finest Baroque buildings and sits near the waterfront. The Culture and Convention Centre (KKL), designed by architect Jean Nouvel, is a modern contrast to the Old Town's medieval streets. If you want to move beyond walking, the Transport Museum is Europe's largest, or you can rent a boat, visit the Picasso Museum, or hike up to Chateau Gutsch for a view over the whole city and lake. The afternoon is unscheduled, so you pick what matters to you.
