The experience

The coach leaves Zurich and travels along the Grand Tour of Switzerland route, passing through rolling vineyards and farming villages near the German border. Your guide explains Swiss history and culture during the drive. After about an hour, you reach Laufen Castle, perched above the Rhine Falls themselves: a 150-meter-wide drop where an average of 700,000 liters of water per second plunge into the basin below. You have roughly an hour here to move at your own pace: take the panoramic glass lift for views from above, walk the Belvedere trail to the viewing platform where you feel the spray and hear the roar, or browse the exhibition and shops on site. A playground and restaurants are there if you want to sit down. The boat ride (available April through October, subject to availability) is optional and costs extra, payable on site by card or cash.

From the falls, the route continues through Schaffhausen and into the countryside toward Stein am Rhein. This medieval town sits on the Rhine with half-timbered houses made of stone, their wooden windows and walls covered in delicate Renaissance frescoes: some of the oldest preserved murals in Switzerland. Your guide leads a walking tour through the old town, pointing out the distinctive buildings and their histories. The White Eagle house, with its famous fresco, is among the most prominent. You walk the streets yourself. The guide provides context and stories as you move through the town.

The return drive to Zurich happens in the evening, ending the tour. The whole day runs 5 hours from start to finish.
