The Experience

"You can hear it before you see it," our guide said as we stepped off the bus near Rhine Falls, and honestly, he was right. There’s this deep rumble in the ground — not scary, just kind of thrilling. The air smelled like wet stone and river moss. We followed him up to Laufen Castle (he joked about how many steps there were — I lost count), and then suddenly there it was: Europe’s biggest waterfall just thundering below us. I leaned over the railing and got hit with this cool mist on my face. Didn’t expect to feel that tiny in Switzerland, you know?

We had about an hour to wander around the falls. Some people went straight for the panoramic glass lift, but I stuck to the Belvedere trail because I wanted to get as close as possible. There’s this spot where you’re right above the water, and it’s loud enough that you have to shout if you want anyone to hear you. In summer, you can do a boat ride (extra cost), which looked wild — boats bouncing close to all that spray. Our guide pointed out some local kids eating ice cream near the playground; they waved at us like we were part of their afternoon.

After that, we drove through Schaffhausen (the Munot fortress is hard to miss) and into Stein am Rhein. The town is small but weirdly colorful — every building has these painted walls with stories on them. Our guide told us about the White Eagle house having one of Switzerland’s oldest murals, but honestly I kept getting distracted by how people greeted each other on the street — everyone seemed to know everyone else. We wandered cobbled lanes while he explained bits of history; I tried saying “Grüezi” like he showed us but probably messed it up (he laughed). The whole place smelled faintly of bread from somewhere nearby.

The drive back was quiet — everyone a bit tired, some asleep against the windows. I still think about standing over those falls, feeling so small but kind of lucky too.
