Step-by-step itinerary
Zurich to Rhine Falls and Schaffhausen
- Meet in Zurich city center
- Stroll Zurich Old Town and lake shore
- Visit Rhine Falls viewing platforms
- Optional boat ride at Rhine Falls
- Enjoy meal near Rhine Falls
- Explore Schaffhausen old town
The experience
The tour starts with your guide meeting you at your Zurich hotel and driving you north toward the Rhine Falls. On the way, you pass through Zurich's old town (the Grossmünster, the narrow lanes, the lake shore) before heading into the canton of Schaffhausen. The route itself is the introduction: you're moving through northern Switzerland's landscape with someone who knows it.
At the Rhine Falls, the day opens up. You have access to multiple walking trails and viewing platforms that let you see the waterfall from different angles: some close, some from a distance, each one framing the cascade differently. If you want to get even closer, the optional boat ride takes you across the Rhine itself for 15 minutes, putting you right at the base of the falls. The guide photographs you throughout the day, and you leave with edited photos and a short travel reel. There's time to eat at one of the restaurants overlooking the falls if you want a meal with the view.
After the falls, you move into Schaffhausen, a town known for its IWC watch manufacture and its preserved old town. You wander through the streets at your own pace with the guide, then return to your Zurich hotel. The half-day version runs about five hours. If you prefer a full day, the tour can extend along the Rhine to Diessenhofen (a Swiss border town with a historic wooden bridge), and then to Stein am Rhein, famous for its painted half-timbered houses where Lake Constance flows into the Rhine. That version takes seven hours and covers more ground, but the core experience (the falls, the guide, the flexibility) stays the same.
