The experience

The Wengernalp railway climbs for 45 minutes from Lauterbrunnen, passing through meadows and forest before the landscape opens onto the ridge at Kleine Scheidegg. The Eiger North Face, the one from The Eiger Sanction, rises close enough that the scale stops being abstract. You spend the afternoon there on your own terms: some travelers walk the ridge trails, others sit with coffee and watch the light move across the peaks, and some take an earlier train down to Grindelwald to explore the village before meeting the guide for the descent.

The day starts at the Gray Line trailer at Sihlquai in Zurich. A deluxe coach carries you east through the foothills to Interlaken for a short stop, then down into the Lauterbrunnen Valley, where you board the cogwheel train. The return journey reverses the route, with the coach bringing you back to Zurich in the evening. The whole day runs about 11 and a half hours from pickup to drop-off.

Your guide travels with you on the coach and knows the route, the railway and the options at the top. Food and drinks are not included, so bring what you want or plan to buy at Kleine Scheidegg. The air-conditioned coach means the climb is comfortable, and the cogwheel train does the steep work for you.

What’s included

Is this one for you?The afternoon at Kleine Scheidegg is unscheduled, so you set the pace: walk as much or as little as you want in the alpine air, or skip the ridge trails and spend the time at the station. The cogwheel railway handles the steep ascent, so the physical demand is moderate, not strenuous.
