The Experience

I’d seen photos of the Matterhorn before but nothing really prepares you for that first glimpse. We left Zürich early—still a bit sleepy, clutching coffee—and as the train rolled past Lake Thun (the water’s this odd blue-green, almost unreal), I kept pressing my forehead to the window like a kid. Our guide, Stefan, pointed out Bern in the distance and tossed in little facts about Swiss politics—he made it sound way more interesting than I expected. I still can’t pronounce Lötschberg right, but going through that tunnel felt like crossing into another world.

By the time we switched trains at Visp for the cogwheel up to Zermatt, the air was already thinner and sharper. Zermatt itself is all wooden houses and flower boxes—there’s this smell of wood smoke mixed with something sweet from a bakery nearby. We wandered through old lanes while Stefan told us about climbers who’d tried (and sometimes failed) to summit the Matterhorn. He showed us the graveyard where some of them rest; it was sobering in a way I didn’t expect. At one point I tried asking an old man for directions in my terrible German—he just grinned and answered in perfect English. So much for practicing.

The highlight was definitely taking the cogwheel train up to Gornergrat. The ride climbs so fast your ears pop, and suddenly you’re above everything—snow everywhere even though it was June. At the top, people got quiet all at once. The view: glaciers curling below, Matterhorn sharp against a sky that looked too big for Europe. I couldn’t stop staring (or taking photos—I know, typical). There’s a hotel up there too; someone said it’s Switzerland’s highest. Maybe next time I’ll stay overnight just to see sunrise on those peaks.

The journey back down felt slower somehow—maybe because none of us wanted to leave yet. On the train home to Zürich, everyone was sharing photos and stories; even Stefan seemed reluctant to say goodbye at the end. It’s strange how a day can feel both long and too short at once.
