The Experience

Your day starts with a train ride from Zurich into the Bernese Alps, arriving in Grindelwald to board the Firstbahn cable car up to 2,168 meters. The First Cliff Walk by Tissot is the centerpiece: you walk along a suspended metal pathway that clings to the cliff face, step onto a glass-bottom platform, and stand inside a 360-degree panorama of the Eiger, Wetterhorn and Schreckhorn. The walk is easy but the exposure is real — the Alps surround you on all sides and the valley floor drops away beneath the glass.

From First, you have the option to hike down to Bachalpsee Lake, a high alpine lake at 2,265 meters famous for its mirror-like reflections of the surrounding peaks. The hike takes roughly one to one-and-a-half hours each way and passes through alpine meadows and past dramatic rock formations. If the weather holds, the lake reflects the Wetterhorn so perfectly that the mountain appears twice. Alternatively, you can rest at the mountain restaurant and absorb the views without the descent.

The afternoon moves into the villages. Cable cars and trains carry you down to Lauterbrunnen, a valley village surrounded by 72 waterfalls — Staubbach Falls, one of Switzerland's tallest free-falling waterfalls at nearly 300 meters, drops directly into the valley and is visible from the village floor. From there you ascend by cable car to Mürren, a car-free village perched on a terrace above the valley with unobstructed views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. You walk through Gimmelwald, another car-free village with traditional chalets and meadows, and pass through Stechelberg at the valley's end. Your guide offers insider tips about each stop and handles the logistics of which cable car, which train, which direction — you follow and shoot photographs.

Transport is included: trains from Zurich, regional buses, cable cars and mountain railways all run on a fixed schedule that the guide coordinates.
