Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Appenzell and Liechtenstein

  • Stroll Appenzell village
  • Visit Maestrani chocolate factory
  • Ascend Hoher Kasten mountain
  • Walk main street in Vaduz

The experience

Appenzell sits in the northeast, a region that has largely escaped the tourist crowds flooding other parts of Switzerland. The drive from Zurich takes you along the Sihlbrugg pass and across Zürichsee to Rapperswil, where a medieval castle sits above the water, before climbing toward the high point of the day. Mt Säntis rises to 2,502 metres, the highest peak in the region, and on a clear day the view reaches across six countries. You'll spend time at the top taking in the scale of what surrounds you.

From the mountain you descend into Appenzell's green, rolling landscape. The village itself is one of Switzerland's oldest, and its pedestrian zone is built almost entirely from centuries-old wooden houses painted in deep reds, blues and greens. You'll walk through on your own pace, stopping where the facades catch your eye. The route also includes a stop at the Maestrani chocolate factory, where you see how some of Switzerland's most famous brands are produced and get to taste the result. On the way back to Zurich, you cross the Rhine into Liechtenstein and walk the main street of Vaduz, the capital, where the post office will stamp your passport if you want the proof of the visit.

The tour runs 8.5 hours total. You'll need a moderate level of fitness for the walking and the mountain visit, though the cable car does the climbing for you. Children from age 12 are welcome. Water is provided throughout the day, and your guide speaks English and leads the entire route.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.

What is Mt Säntis and what can you see from the top?

Mt Säntis is the highest peak in the Appenzell region at 2,502 metres. On a clear day the view spans six countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and Italy. A cable car takes you up, and there's time to walk around and take photographs from the summit.

What do you actually do in Appenzell village?

Appenzell is one of Switzerland's oldest villages, built almost entirely from centuries-old wooden houses with painted facades in deep colours. You'll stroll through the pedestrian zone at your own pace, looking at the architecture and the narrow streets. There's no set itinerary once you're there. You walk where you want to go.

Does the tour go into Liechtenstein?

Yes. On the way back to Zurich, you cross the Rhine and drive into Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein. You'll walk along the main street and can visit the post office to have your passport stamped as a souvenir of the visit.

What happens at the Maestrani chocolate factory?

Maestrani is a working chocolate factory where some of Switzerland's most famous brands are produced. You'll see how the chocolate is made and get to taste it. The factory is a working production site, not a museum, so the tour shows you the real process.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

You'll walk through Appenzell village at a leisurely pace on your own, and through Vaduz's main street in Liechtenstein. Mt Säntis is reached by cable car, so no climbing is needed. The tour requires a moderate level of fitness overall, and the walking sections are not strenuous.
