Step-by-step itinerary

Wildlife safari in Yala National Park

  • Enter Yala National Park early
  • Join customized safari tour
  • Spot elephants, leopards, and bears
  • Observe diverse bird species
  • Explore savannahs, jungles, and lakes
  • Complete safari and exit park

The experience

You arrive at Yala National Park and your guide meets you with a private jeep. Fast entry means you skip the queue at the gate and enter during the hours when animals are most active: the park opens at 6am and closes at 6pm. Your guide knows where to find the wildlife: Sri Lankan leopards (rare and elusive), Asian elephants, sloth bears, sambar deer, crocodiles and the birds that fill the park. Binoculars come with the jeep, and bottled water and soft drinks are included so you stay comfortable during the drive.

The route is yours to shape. You can book a 4-hour safari if you have a free afternoon, a 7-hour one for a fuller day, or the 12-hour option if you want to stay inside the park from opening to closing: wildlife lovers often choose this to catch animals at different times of day. Your guide adjusts the pace and the stops based on what you want to see and how long you want to linger. The park is large, so the time you pick determines how much ground you cover and how deep you go into the different zones.

Your driver does not drink alcohol the night before work, a safety measure the operator enforces. Chips are included as a snack. Bring your own camera. The operator does not provide one. Children from age 5 are welcome, and infants sit on an adult's lap.

What’s included

Park entry tickets, an English-speaking guide, a private jeep, binoculars per jeep, bottled water, soft drinks and chips are included in your booking.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What animals am I most likely to see in Yala National Park?

Yala is home to Sri Lankan leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears, sambar deer, crocodiles and many bird species. The leopard is elusive and sightings are not guaranteed, but the park has one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Elephants, deer and birds are more commonly spotted, and crocodiles live in the lakes and waterways throughout the park.

How long should I book the safari for if I want the best chance to see wildlife?

The 12-hour safari lets you stay inside the park from 6am to 6pm and observe animals across different times of day, which is why wildlife lovers often choose it. A 7-hour safari covers substantial ground and gives you several hours to explore different zones. A 4-hour safari works if you have a limited afternoon but covers less territory.

What time does the safari start, and can I choose when to go?

The park itself opens at 6am and closes at 6pm. Your guide will coordinate the start time with you based on which duration you book and your hotel location. Early morning is when animals are most active, so many safaris begin near dawn.

Is this tour private, or will I share the jeep with other travelers?

This is a private safari, so you have your own jeep and guide. The jeep comes with binoculars for all passengers in your group, and your guide customizes the route and pace to what you want to see.

What is included in the price, and what do I need to bring?

Park entry tickets, the guide, the jeep, binoculars, bottled water, soft drinks and chips are all included. Bring your own camera, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable clothes for sitting in an open jeep. Binoculars are provided, but if you prefer your own, you can bring them.
