The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost missed the first leopard. Our driver, Sunil, just stopped the jeep so suddenly that my water bottle rolled off the seat. He whispered something in Sinhala and pointed, his hand steady. There it was: a flick of a tail in the dry grass, maybe twenty meters away. I’d read about Yala being famous for leopards but didn’t expect to see one before breakfast. The air smelled dusty and warm, with something sweet drifting from the trees — Sunil said it was “mee flowers,” but I probably misheard. He grinned anyway.

Breakfast was this little picnic under a spindly tree — rice cakes wrapped in banana leaf, spicy sambol that made my nose run (in a good way), and strong tea poured from a battered thermos. There were peacocks strutting around like they owned the place. A few jeeps passed by but most of the time it felt like we had our own corner of Yala to ourselves. We saw elephants just after — a mother with her calf, both coated in red dust, quietly pulling at branches while some monkeys squabbled overhead. The main keyword here is “full day safari yala” but honestly it just felt like being dropped into someone else’s world for a while.

I think what surprised me most was how much life there is if you slow down — mongoose darting across the road, jungle fowl making weird noises (Sunil tried to imitate them; not bad), even a sloth bear lumbering off before I could get my camera out. The light kept changing all day — sharp gold at noon, then softer as we ate lunch (vegetarian curry, simple but perfect) near a watering hole where buffaloes wallowed and eagles circled overhead. At one point I just put down the binoculars and sat back because there was too much to take in at once.

By late afternoon I was sunburned and tired but didn’t really want to leave yet. There’s something about watching wild elephants move through that dry landscape that sticks with you — slow, heavy steps and this calm patience I can’t explain. Even now when I hear birds outside my window at home I think of that day trip to Yala from Tissamaharama and wonder if those leopards are still out there somewhere.
