The experience
Yala National Park's Block 1 holds the highest density of leopards among all Sri Lanka's wildlife parks, which is why the route concentrates there. You ride in a soft-top Jeep with the roof open. The setup that lets you spot and photograph animals without the barrier of glass. An experienced driver who also tracks wildlife sits up front. You choose between a dawn departure at 5:30 am or an evening one at 2:30 pm, depending on which light and animal activity pattern suits you. The park holds 32 mammal species including sloth bears, spotted deers, sambars, golden jackals and a large elephant population that moves through regularly.
The route covers the park's main zones where monkeys leap through the woods, fan-tailed peacocks move through the undergrowth, and water buffalos gather near open water. Around 130 bird species live in the park, so binoculars and a field guide earn their weight. The Jeep's open roof means you're exposed to the elements and the sun, so bring sunscreen, a hat and water. The driver does not provide food or drinks. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included if you're staying within 5km of the Palatupana Park Gate. If you're further out, you arrange your own transport to the gate.
The booking lets you choose between a Jeep with park entrance tickets included or without them. Pick the tickets option if you don't have them already. Duration varies by option: some run 3 hours, others 6 or 12 hours, so confirm which length you want when you book. A maximum of 6 passengers travel per Jeep, so it stays private to your group.
