The experience

The 4x4 jeep picks you up at 5:00 AM from your hotel in Tissamaharama and heads straight into Yala National Park for the golden hours, 6:00 to 8:00 AM, when leopards are most active. This is when you'll have the best chance to see them hunting across the open plains, alongside elephants grazing, crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks, and herds of buffalo and spotted deer moving through the landscape. Your driver is licensed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and knows the park's zones well enough to position the jeep where sightings are most likely. Monkeys dart through the trees, and the birdlife (peacocks, eagles, bee-eaters) fills the morning.

The 7-hour safari wraps by noon, giving you the rest of your day free. If you book the full-day option, you'll stay inside the park for a picnic-style lunch, then continue into the afternoon and evening. The 3:30 to 5:00 PM drive is another peak time for leopard activity, and the longer route lets you explore multiple zones where rarer species like sloth bears and jackals sometimes appear. You'll exit at 5:30 PM and return to your hotel by early evening. Fresh fruit and mineral water come with you on the jeep. The vehicle holds a maximum of six guests, so it stays small enough to move quickly when a sighting breaks.

The park entrance fee is not included in the base price and runs approximately 13,000 Sri Lankan rupees per person. Hotel pickup covers the Tissamaharama area. If you're staying elsewhere, public transportation options run to the park entrance.
