The experience
Yala National Park sits in Sri Lanka's Southern Province and holds one of the highest concentrations of leopards on earth. The park spans grasslands, forests, lagoons and rocky outcrops where you'll move through at the pace a safari vehicle allows, stopping when wildlife appears. Your driver-guide is a local with years of experience reading the landscape and knowing where animals move through the day. The Land Cruiser is fitted for comfort on rough terrain, with binoculars provided so you can watch from a distance without disturbing the animals.
The park's biodiversity runs deep: beyond the leopards and elephants that draw most visitors, you may see sloth bears, wild buffalo, sambar and spotted deer, along with crocodiles in the lagoons and monkeys moving through the trees. The bird list tops 200 species. A morning safari runs five hours. A full-day option extends into the afternoon, giving you more ground to cover and a better chance at sightings across different hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from Tissamaharama, Kataragama, Palatupana, Kirinda and other Yala-area towns. If you're staying further away, transfer can be arranged.
Bring water and sun protection. The vehicle offers shade but the park offers none. The park entrance ticket is not included and is purchased at the gate when you arrive. Children from age five are welcome, and the vehicle suits all fitness levels since you're seated the entire time.
