The experience
Yala National Park has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and the safari is timed to catch them. A pickup from your hotel in Tissamaharama or Kataragama puts you in the jeep at 5:00 AM for the morning safari, when wildlife is most active. The driver knows the park's grasslands, lagoons and forests, and stops where leopards perch on rocky outcrops, where elephants graze in herds, where crocodiles rest in lagoons. Over 200 bird species move through the park. The driver points out the ones most travelers miss.
The 4-hour safari returns by 9:00 AM (morning) or 6:00 PM (afternoon), fitting a half-day into the rest of your itinerary. The 7-hour morning option goes deeper into the park's interior, with a mid-morning break to rest and drink water. Meals can be arranged if you ask ahead. The full-day safari runs 12 to 13 hours, covering multiple blocks of the park and including a picnic lunch, so you see the park from dawn activity through the late-afternoon hunt. All three options use a private jeep for up to six passengers, and the driver's guiding is included: no separate guide fee.
The jeep is yours alone. You don't share it with other groups. The driver is licensed by Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department and speaks English. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, though if you're staying outside the Tissamaharama or Kataragama area, an extra charge applies. Entry to Yala National Park itself is paid at the gate on the day of your safari.

Top questions
What's the best time of day to see leopards in Yala?
Early morning and late afternoon are when leopards are most active. The morning safari starts at 5:00 AM to catch the dawn hours. The full-day option lets you be in the park for both the early activity and the late-afternoon hunt when predators move to hunt.
Can I see elephants and sloth bears on the same safari?
Yes. Yala's diverse habitats (grasslands, lagoons and forests) hold both species. The 7-hour and full-day safaris spend more time in each area, raising your chances of spotting sloth bears, which are more elusive than elephants.
How many people fit in the jeep?
The private jeep holds up to six passengers, so your group travels together without sharing the vehicle with other tourists.
Is lunch included on the safari?
A picnic lunch is provided on the full-day safari only. On the 4-hour and 7-hour options, water and snacks are available. Meals can be pre-arranged if you request them in advance.
What happens if we don't see a leopard?
Leopard sightings are never guaranteed, though Yala has one of the world's highest leopard densities. The driver knows the park intimately and positions the jeep in prime habitat during peak activity hours, but wildlife sightings depend on animal behavior and luck on the day.
