The experience
The Jeep leaves early or late depending on which drive you choose, and the guide navigates through terrain shaped by what the animals do rather than a fixed route. Leopards rest on rocky outcrops in the heat of the day; elephants move across open tracks in the cooler hours; sloth bears forage in the scrub. Every drive is different because the park itself is different each time: the guide's knowledge of where to look and how to read the land is what turns a ride through the landscape into a wildlife encounter.
Breakfast and lunch are included, along with bottled water and soda throughout the day. The Jeep is built for the terrain and sized so you're not crammed in with strangers. The guide sits with you and explains what you're seeing: the behavior, the habitat, why a particular animal is where it is. Birdlife is constant: the park holds a stunning variety, and even travelers who came for the big cats find themselves watching for the next bird call.
You'll need to purchase your Yala National Park entrance ticket directly at the gate when you arrive. The full day runs 10 to 12 hours depending on the departure time and what the guide finds, so bring sunscreen and a hat. Children from age 4 are welcome on the tour.
