Step-by-step itinerary
Safari at Yala National Park
- Enter Yala National Park
- Search for Sri Lankan leopards
- Spot elephants near permanent lakes
- Observe wildlife in natural habitat
The experience
Ten to twelve hours in a vehicle covering Yala's main roads gives you the highest chance of seeing a Sri Lankan leopard anywhere in the country. The park's leopard density is what draws most visitors here, and the guide knows where to look. Elephants are the other draw: herds move through the park in plain sight when water is plentiful, though during drier periods they retreat to the permanent lakes deeper inside, making them harder to spot from the main routes.
You start with breakfast before entering the park, then spend the morning and afternoon driving and stopping as the guide spots movement. Lunch happens mid-day, with bottled water and snacks available throughout. The shared vehicle means you travel with other visitors, so the pace and stops depend on what the guide finds and what the group wants to linger on. The route stays on established roads. You do not walk into the bush.
Hotel pickup is included, and the guide speaks English. The full day is long, nearly a full rotation of daylight, which is why leopard sightings are more likely here than on shorter safaris elsewhere in Sri Lanka.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the best time of year to see elephants at Yala?
Elephants are most visible in plain sight across the park when water is abundant. During drier periods, they move to the permanent lakes inside the park away from the main roads, making them harder to spot from the vehicle routes.
How many people travel in the safari vehicle?
The safari is shared, so you travel with other visitors in one vehicle rather than in a private group. The exact number varies by departure.
What happens if we don't see a leopard?
Yala has the highest density of Sri Lankan leopards in the country, so your odds are better here than anywhere else. The guide spends the full 10 to 12 hours searching the park's main routes, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed on any safari.
Can infants come on this safari?
Infants are welcome but must sit on an adult's lap throughout the 10 to 12 hour day. The long duration and vehicle time make this tour demanding for very young children.
