Step-by-step itinerary
Morning safari at Udawalawe National Park
- Arrive at Udawalawe National Park
- Observe elephants near the man-made lake
- Enjoy close-up elephant viewing from vehicle
The experience
Udawalawe National Park exists because of one feature: a permanent man-made lake that draws elephants reliably, and the vehicles can get close enough to watch them drink, wade and move across the water. The elephants here approach the safari vehicle more often than they do elsewhere in Sri Lanka, which is why the park ranks above Minneriya for the overall experience. Your guide drives the route in the early morning when the animals are most active, and the 7 to 8 hour tour gives the day enough time to track herds and wait for the moments when they move toward the water.
Pickup from your hotel is included, and breakfast is served before or during the drive. You travel in a private vehicle with a live English-speaking guide who knows where the herds move through the park and can read the landscape for signs of activity. The guide handles navigation and timing. Your job is to watch and photograph. Bring sun protection, binoculars if you have them, and a camera with a good zoom if wildlife photography matters to you.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How close do the elephants actually get to the safari vehicle at Udawalawe?
Elephants at Udawalawe come very close to vehicles more often than at other parks in Sri Lanka, sometimes approaching within a few meters of the vehicle, especially when they are at the lake. This proximity is what makes the park known for the best overall elephant experience in the country.
What time does the morning safari start and when does it end?
The tour runs for 7 to 8 hours total, with pickup from your hotel included. The exact start time depends on your hotel location and the guide's schedule, which you confirm when you book.
What is the man-made lake at Udawalawe and why do elephants gather there?
The permanent lake in Udawalawe National Park is an artificial water source that attracts elephants year-round because it is reliable and accessible. Herds come to drink and wade, making it the focal point of the park and the reason Udawalawe is one of the best places to see large numbers of elephants in Sri Lanka.
Is this safari suitable if I have mobility concerns or am not very fit?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You spend most of the time sitting in the vehicle, so the main demand is comfort with long hours of driving and sitting. The tour is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health or pregnant travelers.
