Step-by-step itinerary
Safari at Yala National Park
- Enter Yala National Park
- Search for Sri Lankan leopards
- Spot elephants near permanent lakes
- Observe wildlife throughout the park
The experience
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most visited safari destination, and for one reason: it has the best chance of spotting a Sri Lankan leopard anywhere in the country. The park's layout (with permanent lakes deep inside and main roads cutting through open areas) creates the conditions that draw both the leopards and the herds of elephants you'll be watching for. When the park is not in drought, elephants roam in plain sight along the roadsides. Even during drier periods, a guide who knows where the animals gather can position you to see them.
The day runs 10 to 12 hours from pickup at your hotel. You'll travel by vehicle through the park with your guide, stopping at vantage points and following the roads where wildlife congregates. Breakfast, lunch, bottled water and snacks are provided, so you're not breaking the rhythm to find food. The guide speaks English and navigates the park based on where animals have been spotted that morning and the conditions on any given day.
This is a shared tour, so you'll be in a vehicle with other travelers. The park itself decides the pace: some days the animals are active and visible. Other days they're deeper in the reserve and harder to reach. Either way, you're spending the full daylight hours in the park with someone who knows where to look.

Is this one for you?The full 10 to 12 hour commitment means you're in the park during both prime viewing windows (early morning and late afternoon) when leopards and elephants are most active. If you have only a few hours, a shorter safari misses these peaks. This length is what makes the sightings possible.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (16 to 17 years); Child (8 to 15 years); Infant (under 3).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the best time of day to see leopards at Yala?
Yala National Park is most active in early morning and late afternoon, when leopards and elephants move along the roads and around the lakes. The guide times the safari to catch these windows, which is why the full day, 10 to 12 hours, covers the prime viewing hours.
Will I definitely see a leopard?
Yala has the highest density of Sri Lankan leopards in the country, so your chances are better here than anywhere else. That said, leopards are wild animals and sightings depend on where they're hunting that day. Elephant herds are far more predictable, especially when the park is not in drought.
What happens if the park is experiencing a drought?
During dry periods, elephants move inland toward the permanent lakes rather than staying on the main roads. The guide knows these patterns and will adjust the route to find them, though the drive may be longer. Even in drought conditions, Yala still offers the best leopard-spotting odds in Sri Lanka.
