Step-by-step itinerary
Guided safari in Yala National Park
- Meet licensed safari jeep driver
- Board 4x4 open safari jeep
- Explore diverse park landscapes
- Spot wildlife including leopards and elephants
- Enjoy photography opportunities
- Follow park regulations and animal welfare policies
The experience
The 4x4 open jeep is the reason you see what you see. Elevated seats and open sides mean unobstructed views and clear sightlines for photography: no roof between you and the animals, no windows to reflect light. Your officially licensed driver knows the park's tracking patterns and uses responsible methods to locate leopards, the animals most visitors come for, along with the elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles that share Yala's 141,000 hectares. The park's landscape shifts as you move through it: lakes where crocodiles bask, grasslands where herds gather, forests where monkeys move through the canopy, rocky outcrops that offer vantage points across the terrain.
Hotel pickup happens early for the morning and full-day options. The dawn hours are when the animals are most active. Breakfast is included before or during the drive depending on your departure time. The driver follows all park regulations and the booking platform's Animal Welfare Policy, which means no chasing, no off-road driving outside approved routes, and no feeding or disturbing wildlife. This is not a crowded tour: the jeep holds a small group, and the guide's job is to read the landscape and the animals' behavior, not to guarantee a sighting.
Yala sits in Sri Lanka's southeast, roughly three hours from Mirissa or Unawatuna if you're staying on the coast. The park entrance fee is included in some options and not others. Check which package you're booking. Evening safaris run from 2pm to 6:30pm and catch the animals as they move toward water sources before dark. A morning safari runs five hours and focuses on leopard activity. The full-day option (4:30am to 5:30pm) covers the most ground and the most hours of active wildlife movement.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What animals am I most likely to see on a Yala safari?
Leopards are the signature sighting (Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in Asia), but you'll also encounter elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, buffalo, deer, monkeys and over 200 bird species. Sightings depend on the season, the time of day and animal movement, so there's no guarantee, but the driver's tracking knowledge and the park's wildlife density make encounters common.
Why does the open jeep matter for wildlife viewing?
An open 4x4 jeep gives you 360-degree visibility and elevated seating that puts you at eye level with animals in tall grass or on rocky terrain. There's no glass to reflect light or obstruct your camera lens, and the open design lets you hear the sounds of the park (bird calls, movement in the brush), which helps the driver locate animals.
How early do morning safaris start, and what's included?
Morning safaris depart at 5am (some options list 7am for the five-hour version) and run through mid-morning when animal activity peaks. Hotel pickup is included, and breakfast is provided before or during the drive. The seven-hour morning option focuses specifically on leopard tracking during their most active hours.
Do I need to book the park entrance fee separately?
The entrance fee is included in some safari packages and not in others. It depends which option you select at checkout. Check your package details to confirm whether entry is covered or if you'll pay it separately on the day.
What's the difference between the morning, evening and full-day safaris?
Morning safaris (5am start, five to seven hours) catch peak animal activity at dawn and focus on leopard spotting. Evening safaris (2pm to 6:30pm) capture the late-afternoon movement toward water sources. Full-day safaris (4:30am to 5:30pm) cover the longest stretch of daylight and the most ground, giving you the most hours to spot wildlife across different parts of the park.
