Guides who live in the jungle read the leopard's territory every single day.

A half-day or full-day leopard safari in Yala National Park departing from Tissamaharama, Weerawila or Kirinda, with a driver-guide who knows the park's 14 blocks and operates a private 4x4 jeep for up to six passengers. Early morning and late afternoon drives target the golden hours when leopards hunt. Between those windows, the guide stops to explain the wildlife and landscape you pass. The park holds the world's highest leopard density, and these operators run close to 60 safaris daily.

Step-by-step itinerary

Yala National Park Leopard Safari

  • Enter park at 6 AM
  • Drive to be among first jeeps inside
  • Spot leopards during early morning golden hours
  • Observe other wildlife after golden hours
  • Stop to explain and view animals on route
  • Spot leopards during late afternoon golden hours

The experience

What separates this safari from occasional guiding is the constant presence: these drivers live the wilderness and track leopard territories, watering holes and behavior patterns daily. Fresh pug marks, alarm calls and territorial signs guide the jeep to sightings others miss. You're not following a generic route: the guide reads the jungle in real time and positions the vehicle where leopards are most likely to be.

The day splits into two rhythms. During the first two hours after the 6 AM gate opening and the final two hours before closing, the guide focuses entirely on leopard spotting without stopping for common animals or birds. After those golden hours, the pace shifts: you stop at everything (crocodiles, sloth bears, elephants, monkeys, deer, jackals, mongoose, birds), and the guide explains what you're seeing. The jeep can drive any road in the park, not just the main thoroughfares, so you cover ground others don't reach. A half-day tour runs four hours. A full-day tour runs up to twelve hours and includes lunch.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and the jeep seats a maximum of six passengers, so you travel with your group in one vehicle. The park entrance fee and service charge (approximately 43 USD) are separate and paid on arrival.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 10 years); Infant (under 5).

How often do these guides actually spot leopards in Yala?

The guides run close to 60 safaris daily and know every inch of the park's 14 blocks, positioning the jeep during the golden hours (early morning and late afternoon) when leopards hunt. Yala holds the world's highest leopard density, so sightings are frequent, but no safari guarantees a leopard encounter on any given day.

What animals besides leopards will I see on the safari?

Yala's big three are leopard, sloth bear and elephant. You'll also encounter crocodiles, monkeys, deer, jackals, mongoose and a wide range of birds. During the golden hours the guide focuses on leopards, then stops to explain other wildlife during the rest of the day.

Can the jeep go off the main roads in Yala?

Yes. The operator's fleet of Toyota Hilux and Toyota Land Cruiser jeeps can drive any road in the park, not just the main thoroughfare, so you reach areas other safaris miss.

What's the difference between the half-day and full-day tour?

The half-day tour runs four hours and departs in the early morning. The full-day tour runs up to twelve hours, includes lunch, and covers both the morning and late-afternoon golden hours for leopard spotting, with stops to explore other wildlife in between.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the park gate?

No. Hotel pickup and drop-off from Tissamaharama, Weerawila, Kirinda or surrounding Yala areas are included in the tour price.
