Step-by-step itinerary
Yala National Park wildlife safari
- Begin safari ride in Yala National Park
- Spot leopards and other wildlife
- Observe elephants mud-bathing
- See sloth bears, wild boar, and deer
The experience
Yala National Park spreads across forest, grassland and lagoons that border the Indian Ocean in southeast Sri Lanka, and it holds the highest concentration of leopards in the country. Your private jeep (a Toyota or Mitsubishi) carries up to six passengers with an experienced driver who doubles as your tracker, reading the landscape for movement and sound. The park's terrain shifts between thorny shrubs, tall trees, scenic lagoons and golden sand dunes, each zone a different hunting ground. January through July is peak season for leopard sightings, when the dry months draw animals to water.
A 10-hour safari covers the full park. A 4-hour option focuses the morning or afternoon. Your driver knows where to find the animals that live here: not just the leopards that anchor the trip, but also mud-bathing elephants, sloth bears (a species found nowhere else in South Asia), water buffalo, spotted deer, sambar and golden jackal. The jeep stops when something moves, and the tracker explains what you're watching and why it matters. You bring binoculars. The park brings the wildlife.
Pickup happens within 5 kilometers of Palatupana Park Gate and includes the return drop-off to the same radius. You'll need to arrange entry fees separately if you book a jeep-only option. They're paid in cash at the gate. Bring sun protection, a hat and patience: sightings are never guaranteed, but the landscape itself, the sound of the park and the animals that do appear make the hours move fast.
