Step-by-step itinerary
Safari exploration in Yala National Park
- Spot leopards, elephants, and sloth bears
- Enjoy breakfast and refreshments
- Explore park in safari jeep with guide
The experience
The safari begins early (pickup happens around 4:40 AM from Tissamaharama, Debarawewa, Yodakandiya, Kirinda or Yala areas), so you're inside the park as light breaks and animals are moving. You travel in a safari jeep with a local guide who knows where to find the wildlife and what behavior means. The park itself spans grassland, scrub and water holes where leopards hunt, elephants move in small groups, and sloth bears forage. Over 200 bird species live here too, so binoculars come with the jeep.
The day runs until 6:30 PM, which gives you the full arc of animal activity: the early morning surge when predators are hunting, the midday lull, and the late afternoon when things stir again. Breakfast, lunch and water are provided, so you're not managing meals or dehydration while scanning the landscape. The jeep itself is built for this: high enough to see over grass, open sides to spot movement, and a driver trained to move without startling animals.
Park entry tickets cost 37 USD per person and are not included in the tour price, so budget that separately when you book. Children from age 6 can join, though the long day and early start mean younger kids need to be ready for it. The jeep ride is steady but not smooth, and the pace depends on where animals are, so you're not following a fixed route: the guide reads the day and takes you where sightings are likely.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (6 to 11 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What animals am I most likely to see on a Yala safari?
Leopards, elephants and sloth bears are the main wildlife. The park is known for leopard sightings in particular. Over 200 bird species also live in Yala, so birdwatchers find plenty to watch throughout the day.
Why does the safari start so early in the morning?
Animals are most active at dawn, when leopards and other predators hunt and elephants move to water holes. Starting at 4:40 AM puts you in the park during the peak activity window.
Is the jeep ride comfortable for a full day?
The jeep is open-sided and elevated for wildlife viewing, but the terrain is rough and the ride is bumpy. The long day, nearly 12 hours, means you're sitting for extended stretches, so moderate fitness and comfort with vehicle movement matter.
What's included in the tour price and what do I pay separately?
The tour includes jeep transport, an English-speaking guide, breakfast, lunch, water and binoculars. Park entry tickets (37 USD per person) are paid separately at the gate.
