The Experience
Ever wondered what it’s like to watch the sunrise over Sigiriya Rock, half-awake and clutching a cup of strong local tea? I didn’t think I’d care about ancient citadels before this trip, but there’s something about standing on that summit—sweaty, out of breath, with our guide Nuwan telling us stories about King Kasyapa—that just sticks. The air smelled faintly smoky from someone burning leaves below. We’d started late afternoon so the sun was low and gold, and honestly, my photos don’t do it justice. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on the bus back home.
The day we cycled through Polonnaruwa’s ruins was hot—like, “why did I wear jeans?” hot—but seeing those old Buddha statues up close made me forget about it for a while. Our guide kept cracking jokes about ancient kings having more wives than sense (his words), and a local kid tried to race us on his rusty bike. Later that afternoon, bouncing around in a jeep at Minneriya Park, we watched a whole herd of elephants cross right in front of us. One calf trumpeted so loudly it startled everyone into laughing—including me, even though I was trying to film it.
Kandy was all incense and drumming—at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic you can feel how much it means to people here. There’s this moment during the cultural dance show when you can actually feel the floor shake with the drums. I didn’t expect to love the train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella as much as I did; windows open, wind full of tea leaf smell (and sometimes diesel), green everywhere you look. At one point an old woman selling samosas hopped on board—I bought two just because she smiled at me.
By the time we reached Galle Fort after days of waterfalls and palm trees and too much rice & curry (I regret nothing), I felt like I’d lived a dozen different trips in one. Walking those cobbled streets at sunset with sea breeze mixing with smells from little bakeries—yeah, maybe that’s what people mean by “the journey stays with you.” Hard to explain unless you’ve done it yourself.
