The Experience

Right after our driver picked us up—no waiting around—we headed straight for El Golfo. The air had that salty tang you only get near the ocean, and the green lake looked almost unreal against the black sand. We wandered along the shore, shoes crunching on tiny olivine stones. Our guide mentioned a seafood spot nearby where locals go for grilled octopus; wish we’d had time to stop.

The walk inside Volcán El Cuervo was easy enough for everyone in our group—even my aunt who’s not big on hiking managed fine. The landscape felt otherworldly: just black rock and silence, except for the odd lizard darting past. It’s wild how quiet it gets out there.

At Los Hervideros, I could barely hear myself think over the waves smashing into the cliffs. There’s a path right along the edge—hold onto your hat if it’s windy! The spray sometimes catches you off guard but it’s part of the fun. We took loads of photos here; every angle looks different depending on how the sun hits the rocks.

Jameos del Agua was something else entirely. You step down into what feels like a secret world—cool air, echoey sounds, and these tiny white crabs in the lake that you’d miss if you weren’t looking closely. Our guide explained how César Manrique turned this old lava tube into a place with a restaurant and even an auditorium. The coffee at the café upstairs isn’t bad either.

We made a quick stop at Mirador Del Río for those wide-open views over La Graciosa island and the Chinijo archipelago. If you’re lucky and it’s clear, you can see all the way to Famara cliffs—the wind up there is no joke though, so bring a jacket even if it’s sunny down below.

Cueva de los Verdes surprised me most—a two-kilometer walk through volcanic tunnels with stories about pirates hiding out here centuries ago (our guide swore some of them were true). There’s this “secret” bit they show you at the end—I won’t spoil it, but everyone gasped.

Driving through La Geria was like nothing I’ve seen before: vines growing in little hollows dug into black ash, each one circled by low stone walls. We stopped at a family-run winery to try Malvasía volcánica wine—crisp and slightly salty from the volcanic soil. Even if you’re not big on wine, it’s worth tasting just to say you did.

The Cactus Garden is tucked away in an old quarry near Guatiza; 4,500 cacti from all over packed into terraces and winding paths. Some are taller than me! There’s a small café where we grabbed fresh orange juice while watching local kids chase lizards between pots.

If volcanoes are your thing, don’t skip Timanfaya Visitor Centre. It’s got hands-on exhibits (my nephew loved the seismograph), plus real-time data from volcanoes around the world. You can even watch videos showing how Lanzarote was formed—it makes seeing those black hills outside feel even more special.

Last stop: LagOmar Museum in Nazaret—a house built right into old quarry caves with tunnels and hidden terraces everywhere you look. Designed by Manrique and Jesús Soto, every corner has some quirky detail or view across town. They say Omar Sharif lost this place in a card game… true or not, it adds to the story!
