The Experience

I’ll be honest—I wasn’t sure what to expect when we crossed into Gibraltar from Seville. There’s this moment where the Spanish signs flip to English and suddenly you’re driving past red phone boxes with Africa just across the haze. Our guide, Ana, joked that even the clouds behave differently here—she called it the “Levant cloud” hanging off the Rock. She handed us some local trivia as we rolled up to Europa Point, but I was mostly distracted by the salty wind and that weird feeling of being between worlds.

The real highlight for me was meeting the Barbary macaques. They’re everywhere—on railings, rooftops, even eyeing up people’s snacks. One bold little guy tried to unzip my backpack (Ana just laughed and told me not to make eye contact). The whole place smells faintly of sea air and eucalyptus, which I didn’t expect. We ducked into St. Michael’s Cave after that—the light inside is blue and green, almost theatrical, and it’s cool enough that you forget how hot it gets outside. After wandering through those Great Siege Tunnels (which honestly made me feel like a kid again—echoey footsteps, peeking out at the view), we ended up in town around John Mackintosh Square. It was louder than I thought it’d be—kids running around, someone playing guitar nearby. I grabbed a pastry from a bakery Ana recommended (still don’t know what was in it) and sat for a minute just watching people go about their day. On the drive back to Seville, I kept thinking about that odd mix of British quirks and Mediterranean sun—you don’t really get that anywhere else.
