The Experience

Hands gripping the rail, I watched our captain—Piotr, Polish but joking in Spanish—unfurl the sails off Morro Jable. The wind was salty and sharp, not too strong but enough to make my hair stick to my face. There were only six of us on board (plus Piotr and his friend Li), so it felt more like joining someone’s afternoon than a tour. Someone pointed out a dark fin slicing through the water. “Delfín!” Li called out. For a second I thought he was kidding, but then there they were—three dolphins weaving around the bow. It’s strange how quiet everyone gets when that happens.

I tried steering for a bit (with Piotr watching closely—I’m pretty sure he never let go of the wheel) and realized I have zero nautical instincts. Still, he seemed happy to let me try. When we anchored in a blue-green bay near Jandia, the water was so clear you could see silver fish darting below even before you jumped in. I hesitated at first—cold!—but then just went for it. Underwater felt like another world: sunlight flickering over rocks, some striped fish nibbling at my toes, and somewhere deeper down, Li swore he saw a turtle though I missed it.

Lunch was potatoes with mojo sauce (I can still taste that smoky paprika kick), cheese that squeaked between my teeth, bread warm from the sun. They’d remembered I was vegetarian without me reminding them—small thing but it made me feel looked after. Beer was cold, cava even colder; someone spilled their glass and nobody cared much because we were all barefoot anyway. The wi-fi worked but honestly nobody touched their phones except to take photos of each other grinning like idiots against all that blue.

I keep thinking about that moment when everything went quiet except for wind in the sails and those little waves slapping against the hull. Not sure if it’s always like this on a Fuerteventura sailing trip from Morro Jable or if we just got lucky with people and weather—but either way, it’s stuck with me.
