The experience
You arrive at Seongsan Ilchulbong, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site formed by underwater volcanic eruption 5,000 years ago. The peak rises 182 meters and its outer shell is ringed by 99 stone pillars that resemble a crown from above. If you want to climb, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the top. If climbing isn't your plan, a free left-side path leads directly to the haenyeo performance beach. Either way, you need to arrive by 1:30pm to secure a spot for the 2pm show.
At 2pm, four haenyeo (women aged 70, 79, 81 and 82) perform 10 minutes of singing the Ieodo, a centuries-old work song haenyeo sang while rowing to their fishing grounds. The lyrics speak of the sea as both livelihood and danger, with refrains that repeat in strong dialect and intonation. Then they dive for roughly 10 minutes, holding their breath while working 15 meters down to collect abalone, conch, octopus and other seafood. The performance is free even without a Seongsan Ilchulbong ticket, though bad weather or high seas can cancel it suddenly with no advance warning.
After the performance, the tour moves to the Haenyeo Museum in Gujwa-eup, overlooking Sehwa-ri's white sand beach. All exhibits were donated by haenyeo themselves, including an actual haenyeo house moved into the exhibition hall. You walk through displays on food culture, childrearing, fishing practices and Yeongdeunggut (a shamanistic ritual), and watch a roughly 7-minute video on haenyeo life and work. The Stone Culture Park follows, a large open-air museum and ecological park built around Jeju's volcanic stone heritage. You pass through an entrance shaped like a castle made of stacked stones, then follow a viewing path with stone sculptures drawn from the Seolmundae Halmang folk tale. The museum itself sits underground, and the park is spacious enough that a leisurely pace is recommended. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the driver will return you to your starting point or accommodation after the day ends.
