The Experience

The first thing I remember is the spray from Jeongbang Waterfall hitting my arms—cold, salty, not quite like any waterfall I’ve seen before. Our driver (Mr. Kim, who spoke just enough English to keep things lively) laughed when I slipped a bit on the rocks. He pointed at the sea where the falls crash right in, told me there’s an old legend about an immortal herb hidden nearby. I didn’t find it, but honestly just standing there with wet shoes felt good.

Later we wandered through Jeju Stone Culture Park—giant statues peeking out from mossy paths, everything smelling faintly of earth after last night’s rain. The underground museum was cooler than outside; you could almost taste the damp air. Mr. Kim explained some of the stories behind the stones, though I admit I got distracted by a group of schoolkids practicing their bows to each statue. It was quiet except for their giggles echoing off stone walls.

The coastal road was my favorite stretch—windows down, wind tangling my hair while we watched for haenyeo divers in black wetsuits bobbing offshore. We got lucky and caught a few coming up for air, that sharp “hooi hooi” whistle they make still stuck in my head. At Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak we hiked up (slowly—I’m not as fit as I thought), and at the top you can see why people call it Sunrise Peak. The light shifts so fast over the water; I tried to take a photo but it didn’t really capture it.

Sangumburi Crater felt like walking into another world—wide open sky above this bowl-shaped cliff covered in wild grass. There’s something about standing on volcanic ground that makes you feel small but sort of peaceful too? On the way back we stopped at a market for tangerines and snacks I couldn’t pronounce (or resist). By then my feet were sore and my mind was full—still is, actually.
