The experience
Jeongbang Waterfall is the only waterfall in Asia that falls from land directly into the sea, and it's the opening stop on this tour. The water is cold enough to wade in, and the rocks underfoot demand careful footing as you descend the stairs. The climb back up is steeper than it looks. On clear days with sun and rain together, rainbows form across the fall. A short walk away sits Sojeongbang Waterfall, smaller at about 7 meters high but set on the coast with views back toward Seogwipo.
Seongsan Ilchulbong is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site shaped like a castle crown, with 99 stone pillars visible from above. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the summit from the ticket office, and the descent naturally leads you toward Seongsan Ilchulbong Beach, where the haenyeo perform. These women divers surface with a distinctive breathing sound: a sharp "hooi hooi" whistle as they exhale carbon dioxide built up during 1 to 2 minutes underwater and inhale fresh oxygen before diving again. The performance runs daily at 2pm unless weather turns suddenly bad. Seongsan Ilchulbong closes the first Monday of each month, though the left path to the haenyeo beach stays open.
Seongeup Folk Village preserves traditional thatched houses where families have lived for generations, and you can walk the stone-wall alleys free of charge to see how Jeju people lived. The village was once the center of Jeju and supplied horses and cattle to the royal court. Olle Market in central Seogwipo is the largest and oldest permanent market in the city, selling Jeju specialties like omegi rice cakes, tangerines, hallabongs, jade fish, and black pork. Optional stops include Sangumburi Crater (a unique maar formation 100–146 meters deep), Manjanggul Lava Tube (a 1km flat underground cave taking about an hour round trip, very cold and dark, closed the first Wednesday of each month), Seopjikoji Cape with its volcanic-rock lighthouse, and the Stone Culture Park displaying Jeju's stone heritage.
