The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel, airport or port, then moves through Jeju's volcanic landscape and cultural landmarks. Woljeong-ri Beach opens the day with a coastal walk and time to rest at one of the cafes lining the beach road. From there, the route heads to Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, a World Natural Heritage Site on Jeju's east coast: a massive rock formation created by an underwater volcanic explosion, ringed by 99 stone pillars that resemble a crown from above. The climb to the summit takes about 30 minutes. On the descent, you naturally arrive at the viewing area for the Haenyeo performance, where women divers demonstrate the diving techniques that sustained Jeju communities for centuries (performances run at 2pm on days with good weather).
Seongeup Folk Village comes next, a settlement of traditional thatched houses where you walk the stone-wall alleys and see how Jeju people lived. The village was once the administrative center of the island, and horses and cattle were sent from here to the Korean court. You can visit the traditional houses free of charge and see a traditional toilet, or try on a hanbok (Korean dress) if you choose. Sangumburi Crater, a parasitic volcanic crater of Hallasan Mountain, is the only submerged volcano on Jeju: its outer circumference spans 2,067 meters and its depth reaches 100 to 146 meters, forming a conical cliff that rarely erupted lava, only blasted a deep hole. The Jeju Stone Park, a museum and ecological park spread across roughly 1 million square meters, displays stone statues and the island's stone culture woven into the creation myths of Jeju. Seopjikoji, a dramatic coastal cape south of Seongsan Ilchulbong, offers views of tuff cliffs, open sea and rapeseed fields, with a white volcanic-rock lighthouse standing 4 meters high. The site has been used for Korean film and drama shoots and is recognized by CNN as a top tourist destination. A walking path runs along the beach past the lighthouse, and your vehicle waits on the far side so you don't backtrack.
The driver speaks simple English and has extensive foreign tour experience. The vehicle is air-conditioned, registered in South Korea with full transportation insurance, and parking and fuel are covered. Lunch is discussed with you in advance, and the operator recommends restaurants within a 1-kilometer radius of Seongsan Ilchulbong. Food and drinks are your own cost. The Haenyeo Museum, which documents Jeju's diving culture with exhibits donated by haenyeo themselves and an 8-minute video of divers at work, is closed the first Monday of each month, as is the Jeju Stone Culture Park. The tour runs 8 to 9 hours and ends with drop-off at your original departure point or accommodation.
