The experience

You start at the Tokara Delicatessen, surrounded by striking sculptures and contemporary art, before setting off into the vineyards on foot. The walk meanders through beautiful paths that lead to what the operator describes as one of the most breathtaking views in the Cape. A vantage point where you can see from Table Mountain to Cape Point in a single sweep. Here you pause to open a bottle of bubbly and take in the landscape before moving on.

From there, the path descends gently toward Thelema Wine Estate, passing rows of towering eucalyptus trees whose minty freshness shows up in the wines you'll taste. At Thelema's warm tasting room, you sample the estate's acclaimed wines, including varieties poured at Nelson Mandela's inauguration. After Thelema, you make your way back up and into Tokara's elegant tasting room, where floor-to-ceiling windows open onto the Cape's dramatic landscapes. This is where you linger over a curated tasting of Tokara's finest wines. The walk concludes at Zorgvliet Wine Estate, where you taste two more estate wines perfectly paired with the day's experience.

The entire outing runs between three and four hours, starting at 8:30am and wrapping by 1pm. Bottled water and snacks are provided throughout, so you're not managing hunger between tastings. A live guide in English leads the group and weaves in the history and stories of Stellenbosch as you move between estates.

Is this one for you?The walk covers uneven vineyard paths with some climbing, so you need a moderate level of fitness and comfortable walking shoes. If you prefer to taste wine without moving between estates, a seated tasting at a single venue would suit you better. This one is built around the walk itself.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 15 years).

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the walk actually like between the three wine estates?

The route follows scenic vineyard paths that descend from Tokara down to Thelema, then climb back up through Thelema into Tokara's tasting room, and finally down to Zorgvliet. You're walking on established paths through the estates' grounds, not on roads, and the terrain is uneven in places. The operator notes you should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness.

How many wines do I actually taste, and where?

Eight wines across three estates: you taste at Tokara (twice, once outdoors with bubbly at the viewpoint, once in the tasting room), at Thelema, and at Zorgvliet. Each tasting is guided, and the wines are paired with the snacks provided throughout the morning.

What time does this start and finish?

The walk starts at 8:30am at the Tokara Delicatessen and finishes by 1pm. The total duration is between three and four hours, so you're done by early afternoon.

What happens if I can't do a lot of walking?

The walk covers uneven vineyard terrain with some elevation changes, particularly the descent to Thelema and the climb back up. The operator notes it's not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. If walking distance or terrain is a concern, this may not be the right fit.
