The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much before noon, but our driver, Pieter, had stories for every bend in the road. We started late (maybe too late — my fault), but the sun was already warming up Stellenbosch and you could smell the faint sweetness from the vines as soon as we stepped out of the van. Our first stop was Kleine Zalze. I tried their chenin blanc — crisp, almost like biting into a green apple. The woman pouring it told us her favorite is actually their rosé, which made me want to try that too. So I did.

At Annandale Wine Estate, an older man named Jan poured us a red blend that tasted like earth after rain (not sure if that makes sense but it’s what came to mind). By then we were all just chatting like old friends; it felt more like a lazy Sunday than a scheduled day trip in Stellenbosch.
