The experience
Four to eight hours means you're spending a full day or a substantial half-day inside the wine regions, and the difference depends on how many estates you visit and how long you linger over the tastings. The winemaker who guides you holds a B.Sc. in Viticulture & Oenology from the University of Stellenbosch and has worked in wine production across South Africa and internationally, so the conversation goes deeper than a standard tour. You'll walk through vineyards, taste directly from barrels, sit down with owners and marketing managers at their tables, and get a real picture of how South African wine is made and sold.
The day starts with a cheese and wine pairing at one estate, where the winemaker or owner sits with you while you taste their hand-crafted wines. From there you move to a second producer (usually one with views and a curated selection) before lunch at Rust & Vrede or Guardian Peak, where you choose between steak or salmon paired with a glass of wine. The final stops depend on availability and what you want to taste: Ken Forrester if you're drawn to Chenin Blanc and Rhône-style reds, or smaller boutique estates like Posthouse or Le Riche for focused red wine collections. Your guide handles all the appointments and bookings, so you arrive expected and walk past the usual queue.
Transport is in a luxury car or minivan with water provided throughout the day. The tour runs Monday to Friday only, and you're picked up from your hotel or a specific address you provide. The winemaker can conduct the entire tour in German if that suits your group better. You'll leave with recommendations, contacts for shipping wine abroad if you want to, and ideally some bottles you've chosen to take home, though any wine you buy is up to you.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and German.
What does a winemaker guide actually teach you that a regular wine tour guide doesn't?
A winemaker with a degree in viticulture and oenology can explain the science behind what you're tasting (soil, fermentation, aging decisions), and speak directly to the producers as a peer in the industry. They also have contacts throughout South African wine and can advise on exporting or shipping bottles home, which a standard guide cannot.
How many estates do you visit in a day, and does the tour always stop at the same places?
The itinerary includes at least four to five stops across Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, starting with a cheese and wine pairing, moving through two or three tasting appointments, and finishing with lunch at an estate restaurant. The final estate may change depending on availability and your preferences. Your guide will confirm the exact lineup when you book.
Is lunch included in the tour price, and what are my options?
Lunch is at Rust & Vrede estate or Guardian Peak Restaurant, where you choose between steak or salmon with a glass of wine. The cost of lunch is separate from the tour price and paid on the day. You can let the operator know your preference when you book.
Can I buy wine during the tour, and is there help with shipping it home?
Any wine you buy at the estates is entirely optional. Your winemaker guide has experience with international shipping and exports and can advise you on how to get bottles home if you want to purchase.
What's the difference between a 4-hour and an 8-hour tour?
The tour duration depends on how many estates you visit and how long you spend at each one. A shorter day might include three to four stops. A full day adds more tasting appointments and gives you more time to explore each estate and talk with the owners.
