The Experience

First thing I remember is how the air changed as we left Cape Town — saltier, sharp, almost sweet near Muizenberg. Our guide, Thabo, showed up early outside our hotel (he joked he’s always early for surfers), and by the time we hit those bright beach huts, I’d already learned more about local slang than I expected. People were out surfing even though the water looked freezing to me. The wind whipped my hair into my mouth every time I tried to take a picture. Not complaining — it felt like waking up properly.

We rolled through Simon’s Town with its old navy houses and then stopped at Boulders Beach. The African penguins are smaller than you think — and louder. One of them waddled right past a little girl who just froze, grinning. Thabo explained how our entrance fee helps protect them (I didn’t know they’re endangered). The sun was high but not too hot; there was this mix of sunscreen and kelp in the air that stuck to my skin for hours after. Honestly, I could’ve watched those penguins all day.

Driving Chapman’s Peak Drive is something else — cliffs on one side, ocean on the other, and the road sort of clinging between them. Thabo pointed out where movies get filmed here but honestly I was more interested in just staring out the window. At Cape Point we hiked up a bit; wind so strong it made me laugh out loud (and lose my hat). There’s this feeling that you’re standing at the edge of everything — two oceans crashing together below you. We took that classic photo at the Cape of Good Hope sign but it felt less cheesy than I thought it would.

On the way back we stopped for wine at Groot Constantia (optional but worth it if you like wine or old buildings). Hout Bay smelled like fried fish and seaweed — in a good way — and Signal Hill gave us this hazy view back over Table Mountain that somehow made the city feel smaller and closer. Last stop was Bo-Kaap with its candy-colored houses; kids were playing soccer in an alleyway and someone yelled something in Afrikaans that made Thabo laugh (he wouldn’t translate). It was a long day but never rushed. Still thinking about that wind at Cape Point.
