The experience

Your hotel pickup starts the day, and the route moves through five distinct stops across the Cape Peninsula. The guide begins in Bo-Kaap with the history of the colorful houses and the Cape Malay community, then drives to Table Mountain National Park. The cable car to the summit is not included (you buy your own ticket online beforehand to skip the queue), but the guide meets you at the top and points out the views across the city and the Atlantic. The timing depends on weather and season, so Table Mountain may be your second stop or your last, whichever the conditions allow.

From there the route follows the Atlantic seaboard through Camps Bay and Hout Bay, then onto Chapman's Peak Drive, a 10-kilometer mountain road that drops toward the ocean with viewing points for photographs. The drive takes about 45 minutes and includes the Chapman's Peak toll fee. You pass through Noordhoek and stop briefly at an ostrich farm to see the largest bird on the planet, then continue to Cape Point Nature Reserve. Here you can walk to the old lighthouse (the funicular up costs extra) or stay in the vehicle and watch the views where the cold Atlantic current meets the warm Indian Ocean current. At the Cape of Good Hope sign, the guide explains the history and the misconception about the name. It's actually Cape Point, the southwestern corner of Africa.

The afternoon drive follows the False Bay coastline toward Simon's Town, a Victorian-era naval town where you stop for lunch on your own for about an hour and twenty minutes. After lunch, the return journey passes Kalk Bay fishing village and Muizenberg, where you see the colored beach huts from the top of the mountain. The final stretch takes you back to downtown Cape Town, passing Constantia vineyards and the area where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The whole day is nine hours including all driving time.

Boulders Beach, home to about 2,500 breeding pairs of African Penguins, is your second-to-last stop. The guide escorts you to the viewing boardwalk where you may see penguins walking alongside you. Entry to the penguin colony costs extra per person and is not included in the tour price.
