The Experience

The day starts with Table Mountain. A cable car with a rotating floor carries you from the lower station to the summit, where a circular trail lets you roam across the flat top while your guide points out the rare Table Mountain sandstone fynbos and the landmarks visible across the entire Cape Town area. If weather closes the cableway, the tour continues to the next stops and you keep your ticket for another day or request a refund.

From there, the guide walks you through neighborhoods that hold the city's layered past. Bo-kaap's steep cobbled streets run past rows of bright Cape Dutch buildings and several mosques; your guide covers the Bokaap Museum, the first mosque and the Tana Baru shrine. Adderly Street — Cape Town's most decorated street — comes next, lined with life-size bronze sculptures of historic figures and a canal running parallel to the footpath. You walk this stretch before driving to the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest colonial building in South Africa, built in a five-pointed star shape by the Dutch in 1666.
