The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to feel so quiet on the ferry out to Robben Island. The water was choppy and cold spray hit my face — not exactly comfortable, but it made me think about what it must’ve been like for people sent there not by choice. Our group was a mix of locals and travelers; everyone fell silent when our guide, an ex-prisoner named Thabo, started talking. He had this way of pausing before certain words that made you lean in closer. The cells were smaller than I’d pictured. There was a faint smell of salt and old stone — kind of sharp, almost metallic. I kept touching the wall without realizing it.

Back on the mainland, we grabbed quick sandwiches (I went for something with spicy chakalaka — still not sure what all was in there but it worked). Then our driver, Sizwe, took us through Bo-Kaap for a short stop. The houses really are as bright as they look in photos — pinks and blues that almost hurt your eyes under the sun. A little girl waved at us from her stoop; her mom laughed when I tried to say “salaam” back. It felt good to just stand there for a minute and watch people go about their day.

Table Mountain came next. Sizwe handed us our cable car tickets — no lines, which honestly felt like magic after the morning crowds. Up top, the wind nearly stole my hat (twice), but the city below looked unreal through the haze. There’s something about seeing Cape Town from up there that makes everything else shrink away for a bit. We didn’t rush; Sizwe let us wander as long as we wanted before heading back down. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy at home.
