The Experience
I didn’t expect the Castle of Good Hope to feel so lived-in — there was this echo under the stone archways, almost like the place was still catching its breath from centuries ago. Our guide, Zanele, had this way of weaving history into small things; she pointed out a chipped cannonball stuck in the wall (I totally missed it) and told us how schoolkids sometimes sneak through here on their way home. The air smelled faintly of sea salt and something sweet from a food cart nearby — not sure what it was but I wish I’d asked.
Bo-Kaap hit me with color before anything else. Pink, turquoise, yellow houses all stacked together like someone spilled a box of crayons. We stopped at a tiny corner shop for a snack — I tried koeksister for the first time (sticky, spicy, sugary — my hands were a mess). Zanele laughed when I tried to say “Bo-Kaap” properly; apparently my accent is hopeless. There were kids playing soccer in the street and an old man waving from his stoop. It felt like everyone knew each other here.
We only walked past the District Six Museum but Zanele slowed down and told us about her uncle who grew up in that neighborhood before it changed forever. Her voice got quieter there; it’s hard not to feel something when you see empty lots where homes used to be. We wandered through Greenmarket Square too — vendors calling out prices, beads clacking together in the breeze. I could smell grilled meat somewhere but never figured out where it came from (maybe next time). The whole day felt less like ticking off highlights and more like being let in on little secrets — which is probably why I keep thinking about it now.
