The Experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel and starts by heading to Bo-Kaap, one of Cape Town's oldest neighborhoods. The brightly colored Cape Georgian houses here date back to the mid-1800s when freed slaves built their first permanent homes in the area. Your guide walks you through the history and culture while you photograph the streets, then the tour heads west toward the coast.

From there, you ascend Table Mountain via cable car—a kilometer above sea level with views across the city, Robben Island and the Atlantic Ocean. Your guide points out the mountain's geology, flora and fauna and helps with photos. The route then turns south toward Cape Point with multiple stops along the way: Camps Bay with the Twelve Apostles mountain range as a backdrop, Hout Bay's fishing harbor, and the winding Chapman's Peak Drive, a mountainside road carved into the cliffs. At Cape Point Ostrich Farm, you can view ostriches from the roadside or ask your guide to drive closer if you want to feed them and take pictures.

Cape Point National Park itself covers 7,700 hectares and holds over 2,000 plant species, 70 percent of them found nowhere else on earth. Wildlife—antelope, zebras, baboons and birds—roam the park. Your guide drives you around, sharing stories about early explorers and making stops for photos. The unused Cape Point Lighthouse sits 400 meters above sea level; you can hike to it or take a funicular at extra cost. At the Cape of Good Hope, the southwestern tip of Africa where Atlantic and Indian Ocean currents meet, you'll find the famous welcome sign that draws queues of visitors daily.

After lunch at a restaurant in Simon's Town (your choice), the tour finishes at Boulders Beach, where a boardwalk lets you see endangered African penguins from close range without disturbing them. Your guide then drops you at your preferred location in the city.
