The Experience

I still remember standing in Bo-Kaap that morning—those houses really are as bright as they look in photos, but the air smelled faintly of spices and something sweet I couldn’t place. Our guide, Thabo, told us about his grandmother’s curry recipe while we tried to guess what was simmering somewhere nearby. The city felt alive already, even before most shops had opened. We crammed into the van with strangers who’d soon feel less like strangers, and off we went toward Table Mountain.

The cable car up Table Mountain spun slowly (I didn’t expect that), so everyone got a different view without fighting for a window. Up top, the wind was sharp enough to make my eyes water—maybe just the view though. Thabo pointed out Robben Island in the haze and made a joke about his hair never behaving up here. Coming down felt almost too quick. Later at Maiden’s Cove near Clifton, I watched waves slam into rocks while someone nearby tried (and failed) to get a selfie with all four beaches in one shot.

Driving Chapman’s Peak Drive was kind of surreal—those 114 curves really do hug the cliffs like you see on postcards. We stopped for photos and I realized my hands smelled faintly of sunscreen and chips from our snack stop in Hout Bay. At Cape Point, there’s this moment where you’re looking out over two oceans (even if it’s not technically where they meet), and it feels like the end of something big. The funicular up to the lighthouse rattled more than I expected; honestly, I liked that part best.

Boulders Beach is full of penguins doing whatever they want—one waddled right past my foot without caring at all. Kids squealed every time one dove into the water. It was warmer than I thought it’d be by late afternoon in Simon’s Town; we wandered past old shops and Thabo pointed out Just Nuisance’s statue (the dog who joined the navy—still makes me laugh). By Muizenberg, some people swam but I just watched surfers wipe out again and again. The drive back was quiet except for someone softly humming along to an old song on the radio. Sometimes you don’t need words for that last stretch.
