The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much at penguins, but honestly, Boulders Beach is just full of them — waddling around like they’re late for a meeting. Our guide, Thabo, knew exactly where to stand so we wouldn’t get in their way (or their smell, which is… memorable). I tried to count them but gave up after about twenty; they blend into the rocks. The air was salty and sharp that morning, and some kid nearby kept giggling every time a penguin tripped.

Driving out from Cape Town felt like slipping out of the city’s grip — the buildings faded and suddenly it was all wild fynbos and low clouds. We stopped in Simon’s Town for coffee (strong enough to wake anyone) before heading toward Cape Point. Thabo told us stories about shipwrecks and pointed out ostriches along the road — I honestly thought he was joking until one strutted by. At Cape Point itself, you can either take this little funicular or walk up; I walked because it felt right to earn that view. Wind nearly knocked my hat off. There’s something about seeing where two oceans meet — even if technically they don’t “meet” right there — that makes you feel small in a good way.

The hike from Cape Point down to the Cape of Good Hope wasn’t as tough as I’d feared (bring decent shoes though), but my legs were jelly by the end. It’s only about 40 minutes but you’re on this path with nothing but waves below and seabirds above. At one point we just stopped talking — everyone kind of lost in their own heads, watching the spray hit the rocks far below. The sun came out for a second and everything looked gold.

On the way back through Silvermine Nature Reserve, I dozed off for a bit — blame it on all that sea air — but woke up just in time for those views over Kommetjie and Scarborough. Someone passed around dried mango from a market stall we’d stopped at earlier; sticky fingers everywhere. So yeah, if you’re looking for a day trip from Cape Town that’s not just ticking boxes, this one actually sticks with you.
