The experience

Inverness is the starting point for a full day that moves between the Highlands' most photographed castles and rock formations. You begin at Urquhart Castle on the shore of Loch Ness, where ten minutes at the viewpoint gives you the famous ruins without entering the castle itself. From there the route heads north toward Skye, stopping at Invermoriston Falls for fifteen minutes to stand in the river views before the next leg.

Eilean Donan Castle arrives next, and you have 45 minutes to walk the grounds and photograph the castle from the outside. It's the seat of Clan Macrae and one of Scotland's most recognizable structures. If you want to go inside, admission is separate. The real time opens up at the Fairy Pools, where you get 90 minutes to wade into the water itself. The pools are believed to have been Skye's own fountain of youth, and on a clear day the water shows colors that make the legend feel plausible. This is one of the most visited spots on the island, and the time allows you to move past the crowds at the entrance.
