The experience
You start in Bucharest and drive to Constanta, Romania's oldest city, founded as a Greek colony in 657 BC and later renamed by the Romans. The Old Town holds the Museum of History & Archaeology, a Roman mosaic, the largest from the Roman Empire, and the Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, built in Byzantine style. The Genoese lighthouse, first constructed in the 13th century and rebuilt in 1858–1860, stands at the harbor's edge. Climbing the minaret tower of the mosque built by King Carol I gives a panoramic view across the city. The Aquarium Constanta, Romania's first public aquarium, rounds out the afternoon before you move on to Tulcea, known as the gate to the Danube Delta.
Tulcea sits on seven hills and was once the Greek settlement Aegyssus. After dinner and an evening walk along the harbor promenade, you stay overnight at a 3-star hotel with breakfast included. The next morning, you board a boat to enter the Danube Delta itself: the second-largest river delta in Europe and the best preserved on the continent. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage site in 1991 for good reason: 327 bird species, 133 fish species, and wetland vegetation found nowhere else in Europe. During the boat tour you watch pelicans, cormorants, egrets, herons and swans move through the water lands and reed beds. After lunch, you return to Bucharest by car.
