The experience
The tour starts with a 270-kilometer drive from Bucharest to Sibiu on day one. En route you stop at Cozia monastery, a fourteenth-century Wallachian monument with Armenian decorations and frescoed interiors. Sibiu itself is a medieval city where Romanians and Saxons have lived for centuries. It was named European Capital of Culture in 2007. The three main squares (Big Square, Small Square and Huet Square) sit inside the old walls, surrounded by fifteenth-century bastions and the famous "houses with the eyes." The largest gothic evangelical church in Transylvania stands here too.
Day two covers 200 kilometers through Sighisoara and Brasov. Sighisoara is the best-preserved citadel in Europe and still inhabited. Its historic center has been a UNESCO site since 1999. You climb the wooden schoolchildren's ladder to reach the hilltop church, see the Clock Tower, and pass the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (where lunch is available separately). Brasov follows: a once-fortified Transylvanian town with German Gothic and Baroque architecture. The Black Church dominates the skyline: it is the largest evangelical Gothic church in Eastern Europe, 90 meters long with a 65-meter bell tower and Romania's finest nineteenth-century mechanical organ. The First Romanian School sits in the Schei district, the oldest Romanian neighborhood, and the restored Council Square now houses a museum.
Day three returns you toward Bucharest via two castles. Bran Castle sits 25 kilometers from Brasov at the Bran-Rucar passage, the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. It gained fame from Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula novel. The castle itself dates to 1377 and served as a royal residence from 1912 onward. Peles Castle follows: the summer residence of Romania's first king, Charles I of Hohenzollern. Built between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by a Czech architect, it was one of Europe's most modern castles at the time. Each room has its own style. The Florentine room recreates an Italian Renaissance atmosphere. From there the drive returns to Bucharest.

Is this one for you?The tour moves by vehicle between stops, so the pace is set by the itinerary rather than by walking. If you prefer to linger in one place or set your own rhythm, a self-guided trip would suit you better. The 3-day length fits the two castles and three cities into one journey without rushing. A 2-day version would skip either Sighisoara or one of the castles, while a 5-day tour would add more time in each location.

What is Bran Castle and why is it called Dracula's Castle?
Bran Castle sits at the Bran-Rucar passage between Transylvania and Wallachia, 25 kilometers from Brasov. It gained its Dracula association from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, though the castle itself dates to 1377 and served as a strategic border fortress before becoming a royal residence in 1912.
Is Sighisoara really still inhabited inside the citadel?

How much driving happens each day on this tour?
Day one is 270 kilometers from Bucharest to Sibiu. Day two covers 200 kilometers between Sibiu, Sighisoara and Brasov. Day three is the return to Bucharest with stops at Bran and Peles castles along the way. All travel is by air-conditioned vehicle with your driver.
What is the Black Church in Brasov?
